Learning to avoid poverty
LINDSEY ROGERSON

THIS month two secondary schools in one of the most deprived parts of Glasgow will get their own credit unions thanks mainly to the Greater Easterhouse Money Advice Project (GEMAP).

The initiative was established to make it easier for those often red-lined by the big banks to borrow small amounts at affordable rates and to encourage saving by boosting credit union membership. The hope is that encouraging children to build up a nest egg while still at school will help them escape a lifetime of poverty and crippling debt.
