History
In 1992 Ian Telfer, Warrington Borough Council's Senior Community Development Officer, instigated a training course for volunteers. The long term aim was the introduction of Credit Unions in the Warrington area.
The four who volunteered for the course continued to meet regularly after it's completion. They eventually established the Poulton North Savings Club in March 1993. The Savings Club was to prosper, with the training of new directors continuing until the Registrar of Friendly Societies granted the club the right to operate as a Credit Union in 1994.
This was the vote of confidence the volunteers had been working so hard to achieve and resulted in the opening of the Credit Union with some 180 members and cash carried forward of £12,000. In March 2000 the Credit Union went on to extend it's 'common bond' to include the New Town area of the Birchwood ward. Subsequently amalgamating with it's near neighbour, Poplars Credit Union in 2002 brought a further enlargement of the 'common bond' area.
With the Poplars merger and extended 'common bond' area approved, the way was clear for the organisation to change it's name to the North East Warrington Credit Union, reflecting more completely the catchment area it now served.
From the 3 square miles covered by the original Credit Union, NEWCU now operates across an area of approximately 24 square miles with a resident population in the region of 24,000 people.
From small beginnings, NEWCU now has 50 dedicated volunteers, including a full board of directors.
